Civil Engineer Intern Position

OVERVIEW

The City of Hillsdale is seeking a dynamic and team oriented Civil Engineering or Construction Management intern to assist the City Engineer with the planning, design, and execution of roadway and utility infrastructure projects within the City of Hillsdale. The ideal candidate will have knowledge and interest in civil engineering and construction projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist in the planning, design, and implementation of roadway and utility projects.
  • Apply an understanding of civil engineering principles to acquire field data utilizing GPS and surveying techniques, develop design plans utilizing AutoCad, and oversee construction activities. Ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with various stakeholders, including other government agencies, community groups, residents and other internal departments to gather input and address project concerns.
  • Conduct inspections, quality control checks, and assessments to uphold high-quality standards and ensure adherence to safety protocols, local regulations, and codes.
  • Maintain accurate project records and data.
  • Have a basic understanding of the principles and practices of professional civil engineering.
  • Have knowledge of construction methods, materials and equipment related to road construction, sewer systems, water distribution systems, street lighting, traffic signals and other municipal public improvements are important. 
  • This position may require the ability to read and interpret documents and reference sources. 
  • Employee may be asked to perform multiple tasks accurately and efficiently under time constraints with a high degree of attention to detail while working independently and cooperatively.
  • The candidate may participate in a wide variety of engineering, planning, and inspection and maintenance activities for engineering problems and may be required to perform complex mathematical equations in order to create and read engineering plans.
  • The candidates shall have a strong working knowledge of computer programs and systems such as AutoCad, GIS, word processing, spreadsheets, email, as well as, the ability to learn and utilize engineering and construction specific programs such as RoadSoft, MERL and other similar programs.
  • An employee in this classification must possess upon hire and maintain a valid Michigan Operators license.

Some physical effort may be required to perform tasks under typical office conditions and on outdoor construction sites.  While performing duties of this job, the employee may regularly be required to sit and/or stand; regularly lift and/or move items up to ten pounds, frequently lift items up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift or move items up to 50 pounds; be able to clearly hear constituents when speaking in person or on the telephone; negotiate construction sites with uneven surfaces.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

Currently working on a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or Construction Management, preferably having completed their sophomore, junior or senior years.
