Snow Removal

We at times experience heavy snowfall during the winter. The City of Hillsdale’s Department of Public Services is responsible for the removal of snow and ice from city streets, while city ordinance requires property owners/occupants to keep the public sidewalks in front of their homes or businesses clear.

When does the city plow its streets?

Generally, after-hours plowing operations begin when slippery conditions exist or snow levels reach about three inches (3") on major streets or four inches (4") on local streets. If snow continues to fall or is predicted, DPS snow removal crews are prepared to respond accordingly. When snow has fallen during the night, plowing begins at 4 a.m., or when the City of Hillsdale Police Department deems it necessary, so the roads will be as clear as possible by the time you start for school or work. If weather or driving conditions warrant, DPS staff works with the Police Department to handle emergency situations.

Snow Route System

DPS uses the following snow removal priorities to determine which streets to plow first.
1. Highways/emergency routes
2. Schools/major streets/city parking lots
3. Local streets/side street parking/parks and cemeteries

Snow & On-Street Parking

When four inches (4") or more of snow has fallen or drifted, no parking is allowed on city streets in order for snow plow crews to get the streets cleared (See Code of Ordinances City of Hillsdale, Michigan, Sec. 32-171).
When four inches (4") or more of snow is expected or forecasted, please assist the City of Hillsdale, our local law enforcement, and street crews, by being proactive and moving your vehicles before they are ticketed, towed, and/or plowed in.

Sidewalk Snow and Ice Removal

City ordinance requires that all sidewalks located within the city be cleared of snow and ice. It is the responsibility of the property owner/occupant to clear such accumulation from walkways within twenty-four (24) hours of a snowfall. As a reminder, when removing snow be sure not to place it in the street. It’s unsafe, and it’s prohibited by state law.
